unnecessary roughness

How should I tell my partner that he is being to rough during sex? Im always sore for a couple days after and I just wish he would be a little more gentle downstairs im just not sure how to go about it without upsetting him or making him feel like I don't like sex with him. It isn't the penetration that hurts its when he is touching my clitoris he just too rough and it feels better when im touched gentley. Any suggestions?
