How to know what size baby clothes to buy ahead of time?

I'd love to start gathering things as I see them instead of waiting until my baby is here, but how do I know what sizes to buy?

Buy a very very minimal number of newborn size clothes, or skip straight to 0-3. My 6.5lb son was already too big for newborn sizes.

I have 3 kids, they lived in long sleeve onesies and pants (my house is chilly).  I bought a few in every size but not much newborn. The bigger they get, the longer they'll wear it. Once they start solids they'll inevitably make a mess even with the bib, so I change mine more at 6m+. Once they're walking I didn't do onesies anymore and switched to shirts. The trick is that some brands fit better than others. E.g. the Gerber onesies run really small and narrow so unless your baby is very slender it'll be harder to fit. Some of the newborn pants are also narrow, before you buy pull on the waist it should expand quite a bit with little pull, mine got more reflux if the pants were snug. DO NOT get snap up the leg/chest jammies you will hate them, if anything get with the zipper but I find those annoying because I have to unzip the whole thing and make the baby cold just to change a diaper. I prefer onesies and pants even for my daughter. 2 of my 3 kids just refuse to wear socks.

If you buy from carters and keep the tag on you can take them back anytime. They don't have a time frame for returns as long as there is a tag!

My friend who has children told me to buy for a 0-3 month old;
7 regular onesies
2-3 pants to match
7 bibs and burp cloths
Couple hats and mittens. 
Socks(she said get a big pack)
She said you won't leave the house much when baby is first here! Just enough to get through the week. Also she said not to buy shoes till they are walking.  
My little one is due first week of April☺

I bought all sizes right up to 2T before my bub was born! Anything that was on sale or a hard to pass up deal I bought. I bought 95% of my newborn sized clothing used from another mom so I didn't spend too much money on items she wouldn't wear for very long. She's almost 3 weeks old and has outgrown the majority of her newborn stuff. I would look for clearance items and good deals and start buying all sizes.

I'd buy gift cards instead of clothes. I bought a ton before baby was here and so much of it I didn't use. Plus I overbought somethings and under bought on others.

I did a poll on buying newborn vs 0-3 months and it was pretty much even on what everyone's babies fit. I got some plain white onesies in newborn but mostly 0-3 month stuff that's weather appropriate for when he's born
