What Causes Spotting

Foe the last few cycles, I have been spotting 2-4 day before af is due. Is there something I should do to not spot? What could the spotting mean?

My friend said it may be a problem with TTC. The lining is shedding before anything can implant. My doc said my hormones were dropping so she is now doing cycle day 21 and 3 testing to check progesterone. I am spotting a whole week before though.

For me it's always like 4-5 days before AF. So annoying! And it makes me feel like something's wrong.
