baby saying mama

My son is 10 months old and has just started saying "mama" and/or "mommom." He seems to always say it when he wants to be breastfed or for me to pick him up. Do you think he knows what it means or it's just a new sound to him? He's been saying "dada" for a long time but that's just seems to be a sound, he doesn't really use it in context. Anyone else's 10 month old doing the same?
