what do I do if he's unhappy.?

So me and my boyfriend have had it rough the past few weeks, a lot of argueing over ignorant things. Today he told me that he wasn't happy but that he didn't want to break up. I had no clue what to do so I broke it off, he begged and begged me not to but I feel if he's unhappy that there isn't a point in being together if I can't give him happiness. We talked and I've cried all day, he suggested a break instead of totally breaking up but in my opinion I feel taking a "break" isn't going to change anything.. Any suggestions or opinions on what to do? I really do love him and losing him is breaking my heart..
