Anyone have IUD migration disasters?

Monica
I'm at a point where I can use some moral support or advice from anyone who has gone through this. I got my Mirena inserted early January this year and a few days after, I looked down after peeing and THE STRING FELL OUT. Like, only the string. I went back to Planned Parenthood to check things out, and sure enough I was missing strings, so they had me do an ultrasound to see if the whole IUD fell out and I just missed the plastic bit. I get the ultrasound and they can't find it, so they say it probably fell out but I should get an X-ray to be sure. So I get an X-ray at my school and, sure enough with my luck, THE IUD IS STILL THERE. But in the wrong place. And sideways.
So...it's not in my uterus anymore, but it's still in my body, and the doctors don't know where it is. The gynecologists at planned parenthood say that I'll probably have to get it removed surgically, but the general doctor assigned to me through my shitty low-income insurance actually asked me why I didn't go to the ER when I've been bleeding slightly for the last month (holy crap he doesn't know what vaginal spotting is), and I basically had to tell him what to give me referrals for. I'm getting a second ultrasound on Valentine's Day, just to be sure the first one was done right, and another recommendation from another gynecologist after that, before I get the referral to a surgeon.
Right now, I get random little cramps and they all freak me out because I keep wondering if that's the IUD next to my pelvis bone when I lay down on my side to sleep, or if that is it more toward the butt, or how quickly does it move around, etc. Like, how rare is this? Has anyone gone through this? There are so many confused doctors that I am feeling very alone in this situation and the idea of surgery is terrifying to me.
