New To The Pill ;-; S.O.S

So I just got my first pill pack and I'm sooooooo confused the doctor told me I could use it as soon as I get it, but the directions say to use it either on the first day of my period or the Sunday after my period. Should I wait for the next period or should I just take it ? ?
