tips on falling asleep asap?

No matter how tired I am, it takes me hours to fall asleep. Unless I'm out or somewhere I can't fall asleep or I still have a few things to do before bed then I get drowsy and dose off. I usually only get 2-3 hours sleep because of this and end up sleeping all day on my days off to catch up on sleep but thay doesn't help as I oversleep and find myself more tired than I would be had I got up and went to work. It's unhealthy and kind of annoying, I'm always exhausted because of it and prefer sleeping over going out. 
Any suggestions?
