Do we ovulate or not at all?

Im new to PCOS and i've been reading that though our periods may be very long (mine is like 50 days) we might still ovulate when the period eventually arrives. I have never tracked my ovultation yet, and i have the clomid that my doc just gave me but i'm still curiouse to see if i ovulate naturally when my period comes. So i dont know if i should start the drug or just test if i ovulate... With the risk that i dont and then i have to wait another 50 days. Recommendations? Own experiences?

I have had pcos for 10 years.. I'm 21. I ovulate for sure, you should try temping for a couple of cycles to understand yours. My cycles are very long and I find only metformin, vitex and Maca help.

Hi ladies. So I too got off birth control in may and realized my cycles were long and irregular (38 - 45 days). I went to the ob who diagnosed me with pcos. He suggested we try naturally for a while before clomid. I had a period in October so we tried then but I never got a positive ovulation test so we assumed it doesn't work. In November I never got a period so again I thought I hadn't ovulated. I went back to the doc and he prescribed clomid which i took in December but again after testing every day for 2 wks....no ovulation. Doc said try clomid again but take a pregnancy test first just to be sure you're not pregnant. 
It turns out i had ovulated in late October and that this whole time I've been pregnant! Now we are deathly afraid the baby will have adverse effects bc i didnt know or take extra care and bc i took clomid while pregnant.

In summary -- yes people with pcos do ovulate just less often and irregularly. Because we don't get regular periods wet have to be super judicious to test for ovulation but also pregnancy.  I hope this story helps :)

If your cycles are that long, I would start the clomid regardless and use OPKs starting on cd 10-13. Even if you were ovulating naturally but late, having shorter cycles will give you many more chances to try (and it makes the process go by faster!). I was afraid to use clomid too but I did fine with it and it really regulated my cycles. (And I continued to have shorter cycles even after I stopped the clomid) Good luck!

It depends on the person. I have a cycle that is about 30 days but I do not ovulate.

If you have pcos ovulation tests will not work,  they give you falus positives.  Basil body thermomerter.  I take clomed and have pcos I'm watched closely and then when the eggs are good  I take a needle called ovadril to make me O.  Then after O I take progesterone suppositories twice a day to make baby stick.  I have been pregnant twice but lost them both for other reasons.  I'm on my second around of 100 mg.  50 mg is a waste.

I'm in the same boat as you. I went off BC last May and ever since then my cycles keep getting longer and longer, now I'm up to 42 days. Since we've only been trying for about 6 months, my OBGYN just suggested I start OPKs to see if and when I ovulate. Then, if over the next few months I don't conceive, or find that I do not ovulate, she will prescribe Femera (similar to clomid). In one way, I really just want to start taking the Rx because I want to speed up the process, but on the other hand I'm really curious to see what my body does on its own with the OPKs. It's tough to be patient with PCOS, but we just have to remember to stay as positive as possible. Good luck to you :)
