Bipolar is a mental illness but that doesn't mean it controls your life. You can get treatment and medication.

If it doesn't completely consume you and alter your overall awareness of things it's not an illness, just a disorder. I think anyway. Mentally ill people need serious help and cannot do everything on their own. They're dependent on others due to how severe it is.

As a mental health professional, I can assure you they are different. To make it simple, having a mental illness and NOT having it under control (with or without meds) is mentally ill, OR suffering from a temporary mental ailment like black outs caused by a traumatic event or any temporary state of mind caused by a traumatic event.
A person can be schizophrenic and still be mentally healthy with it under control.
