Mental illness is a condition being mentally ill is separate they typically are coupled together but you can have a well handled mental illness and not be mentally ill but you can also be mentally ill without a distinct mental illness. These are all opinions of course. But my mother and younger brother are both bipolar and they're both fully functioning people as long as they're taking care of their mental health and their medications are in check. Don't assume that because you've been labeled you will always be defined by that label. Good luck.

So those of you who are voting yes - does that mean because I have bipolar I'll be mentally ill for the rest of my life?

As a mental health professional, I can assure you they are different. 
To make it simple, having a mental illness and NOT having it under control (with or without meds) is mentally ill, OR suffering from a temporary mental ailment like black outs caused by a traumatic event or any temporary state of mind caused by a traumatic event.
A person can be schizophrenic and still be mentally healthy with it under control.

Mentally ill I think means being unable to make descions for yourself. A mental illness can cause this. If you have a mental illness it can cause you to become mentally ill but you may also have short periods where you aren't mentally ill & functioning normally. Am I right?
