Sleeping separate?

Question

So occasionally my boyfriend and I will get into an argument before bedtime, espicially on nights when we haven't gotten much sleep/long days etc. We'll bicker for a little while and sometimes he walks out of the bedroom and says he's sleeping on the couch. Usually I'll argue this because I don't think it's right to go to be angry, but tonight I was so frustrated at how petty the situation was and just let him go. Do you or your so ever sleep separately after an argument?

I think everyone is different.

My husband and I sleep separately sometimes. We usually aren't fuming mad (very occasionally we are) usually we just say "listen, this isn't going anywhere. Let's just take some space." We both wake up feeling so much better. With fresh eyes we either A. Realize how stupid the fight was or B. Having gotten a good night sleep, our brains are able to help us communicate and hear each other better.

The Worst advice I ever got was "Don't go to bed mad." (Though I understand it works for others). We would be up SO late trying to resolve our issues we would get tired, get stuck in loops, and go on for hours sometimes without really Hearing each other.

Do what's best for your relationship. If this works for you and is what feels natural, go for it!

Not sure why it matters... if the fight was bad enough, yes, I'd want to sleep separately. You can't force yourself to get over a situation right before bed sometimes. I would rather take my space and cool off than force something and become even more frustrated. But I'm also the type who likes sleeping alone anyways lol 😂

Yes sometimes I just need my space!time to cool down instead of continuing to argue and just keep fighting it let's us both cool down and think about things then talk calmly the next day

Better to go to bed mad than to stay awake and say something you don't mean out of anger. I can't even count the number of times my hubby and I have gone to bed without resolving an argument. But once we sleep and emotions have calmed down we are able to have a rational discussion.  Still going strong after 13 years together and 10 years of marriage.

When you go to sleep your brain takes all of your memories from the day and stores them in long term memory. Whatever you are thinking about and what emotion you are feeling is stored away. Going to sleep mad or sad makes it much less likely that you will be able to get over it.

While I understand needing your space if you're upset, I very firmly believe in the saying "don't go to bed angry." I think it's important to realize that even when you're upset, you still love each other. Going to bed upset sets the tone for the next morning, I feel like. If I go to sleep sad or angry, I'm going to sleep poorly and be in a bad mood when I get up. My husband and I occasionally have a small spat, but we still always sleep together.
