If I had sex 4 days before my period could I still be late/pregnant? (Hypothetically speaking, we used protection etc)

It's very unlikely. It takes 6-12 days for implantation to occur and so if you did manage to get pregnant a couple of days before your period, it's likely that you would still have that period. If that makes sense haha. If you know how long your cycles are you should know when you ovulate, for example, the average cycle is 28 days and you roughly ovulate day 14
