What happens with first ultrasound?

What do they do and check? Is it only external? Or vaginal? Bloodwork? I'll be 6 weeks.  My husband won't be there and I was wondering if he would be missing the first heart beat?

My understanding is that the ultrasound will be transactional until 10weeks. Depending on how far along you are, and the position of your uterus (forward or retroverted) will determine whether a heartbeat can be seen or heard. Be prepared to video tape the screen during the appointment if you want to play it later for your partner!

I think normally they can't pic up the sound of the heart beat at 6 weeks. My doctor has me coming back at 7 weeks to listen to heart beats for my twins. My first visit was  at 5 weeks. They may be Abel to see a flutter of a heart beat at 6 weeks

At 6 weeks my office only does transvaginal. They will check and measure the uterus, cervix and ovaries. It may be possible to hear a heartbeat from the ultrasound, but unlikely with a Doppler.

My first appointment was 6w6d and was transvaginal. We were able to get pictures and see the heartbeat but not hear it. My husband came which was nice because they needed health histories, to ask about our jobs, etc. They sent for blood work afterwards.
