cleft palate and cleft lip info

If you like learning about fetal development like I do or you're pregnant and like to know cool stuff, here's some info about cleft palate. We all have a little groove under our nose and above our lip called a philtrum.  It's where our face came together in the womb.
They took scans of a developing embryo and it showed how the human face comes together.
To me this is cool as hell. I learned about this because I have a cousin who was born with a cleft palate and cleft lip, that's when the face and or the top of the mouth doesn't fuse together in the womb correctly. Some cases are more severe. My cousin had a pretty severe case. He's had 12 surgeries and as he ages and his head grows, the top of his mouth could grow apart again causing him to need another surgery. In the womb, if the face doesn't form within months 2-3 of pregnancy it never will and will need surgery to correct it.
The baby on the right is what my cousin looked like when he was born. Now it kinda just looks like his philtrum is crooked.
Many things can cause cleft palate. Drugs, viruses, even just simple genetics.
I found this rather interesting and I wanted to share.
