how do I tell him? what do i do?

Question

My boyfriend left his retainer in my room, on my nightstand and when I was walking him out I guess my dog went and got it. 
I came back to his retainer cracked, towards the end of it. 
Retainers are so expensive, and this isn't the first time he's had to get new ones because of me, he left them at my house before and when I went to his house to give them back, his mom threw them away because they were wrapped in a napkin. (he always forgets his retainer case.)

The crack isn't obvious but retainers are made to fit your mouth so I'm sure he'd notice a missing piece and I don't want to lie to him but I know he'll be really upset and our relationship has been kind of rocky for the past 3-4 days so he'll probably just get mad at me and I don't know how to tell him. 
He's coming over tomorrow and I can't just act like "Oh my god it's cracked!" When he sees them because that's lying but I really don't want to tell him my dog cracked them.

I don't know what to do and honestly it's giving me anxiety. 
I just need advice.

Start with, "Honey, I'm pregnant." Then let is sit there for a minute, then say "I'm just kidding, my dog cracked your retainer, sorry" usually difference in the situation lightens the blow. And he may laugh out of relief.

your boyfriend has had this happen before where he left it.. knowing it's happened already he should be more aware of his retainer 
It is not your job to remind him he needs it. 
Your dog chewed it.. it was an honest mistake apologize & tell him to stop leaving it laying around if it's so important

Just  be honest,  because honestly,  it's his fault since he left it there and knowing something could happen to it when it's not in its case,  we'll not your problem.  It's called being responsible

He's the one that was being irresponsible. If he cares so much about his retainer he should be able to take better care of it. You leave something at someone's house, you accept that something might happen to it before you get it back. Especially if there's a dog. I left my glasses at a friends once and her dog destroyed them, and glasses are about as expensive as a retainer. I wasn't mad at her because I knew it was my own fault. It sounds like you're walking on eggshells around this guy, you shouldn't have to be scared to talk to him like this. That's a big red flag to me.

It's his responsibility to not leave it on a night stand where a animal can get to it.  Call the dentist or orthodontist and see if they can remake it. If you still have the study models, you may be able to use those.

This is not your fault. He doesn't have the right to be angry with you. It's his responsibility, not yours. He should have taken care of it himself.
