Is it bad to not take prenatals until you've actually conceived?

I was wondering if you had to take them before ttc or if you can just ttc regularly and take them once you've actually conceived . ?

The first four weeks are crucial for development & thats usually when we dont know yet.

I wouldn't risk it. Prenatals help lower the risk of birth defects.

It's not necessarily "bad" but it's also not optimal. If you know you're trying to get pregnant, it's good to go ahead and be on a prenatal vitamin OR at least an extra folic acid pill to make sure you're getting 800mg from whatever vitamins you take. Folic acid helps with brain stem development which happens right off the bat- often before you know you're pregnant. BUT women have been giving birth to babies since the dawn of time when they didn't have prenatals at all, so in the grand scheme of things it's not the end of the world if you didn't know you were pregnant. Just start when you do! 👍🏻
