WWII, how much do you know? What resonates with you personally?

I have been obsessed over periods of history and it always boggles my mind about how much more information we find as time progresses. How much do you know and why does it matter to you?

My father had a degree in history. My brother has a degree in history. I grew up in  a very history oriented family because "those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it."

Due to my dad's influence, I now have this insane pet peeve regarding people using communism, socialism, and fascism interchangeably and incorrectly.

My mothers cousin was an Auschwiz  survivor. He lived with her family for some time after the war, and told her a great deal about his experiences. I was privileged to meet him only once, but he showed me his tattoo, which stuck with me. I like to remember that resistance is in my blood.

My great grandpa fought and was stationed in Italy for a bit. He wouldn't watch Rocky, he wouldn't eat Italian food, idk what he saw over there but he never spoke of it. Never. He's passed and I'll never know but everyone said he came back different. I probably know a lot more than I can remember right now due to some health issues I'm experiencing but I'm proud to have a decorated WWII Vet as a great grandpa and look forward to my weekly visit tomorrow evening. He was a great man. Truly. I only wish he would've shared at least ONE story with us.

My grandfather is obsessed with WWII. He was in the army and was stationed in Munich  but did not fight in combat. He finds it fascinating and loves to share information. I read books with him. I just bought him a book for his birthday called "The Untold Stories of World War 2" or something like that. I think what I find most interesting is the morale of the soldiers during this time. At least the American soldiers. I get a first hand lesson due to my grandfather being one and knowing many people who went through that as well. But the stories of the Holocaust are also very intriguing. Very sad indeed. We had a group of holocaust survivors or family members of some visit my school so we could hear their stories. It's just insane what the people had to endure. Additionally, the novella "Night" by the late Elie Wiesel is one of my favorite reads on the era.

I studied WW2 in history class in year 10, then Germany from 1918-1945 in year 11, so I know a fair bit. I mostly know about the war from a German perspective. I found Hitler extremely fascinating.

I was personally lucky enough to meet and ask questions to Elie Wiesel a holocaust survivor and the author of the book "Night" (if you haven't read it I encourage you to it's great) he came to my school to read from his book and talk to us about his experiences. It was absolutely amazing, hearing someone's direct view of being in a concentration camp was something I'll never forget

My grandpa and brother were HUGE world war 2 buffs so growing up I didn't have much choice but to know about it. We'd have discussions over dinner about the battle of midway or d-day on the beaches of Normandy. And I had to hear in extensive detail each and every plane, tank and weapon that was used. My grandpa was an even bigger civil war/Abraham Lincoln buff so we had extensive discussions about that growing up too. My family was always pretty hardcore into history and my grandpa taught American history. Now my sister is engaged to someone that's training to be a history teacher so the saga continues.

Shit I meant to say a good amount and clicked a lot. I took AP world and did a research project for an independent study so I know the basics but I really like looking at the world wars from the perspective of other countries. The US didn't join in until after pearl harbor which starting from that point isn't an accurate description of the conflict to me.
