Mid Wife or OB?

Question

I am only 4 weeks pregnant, just found out!? And already the questions are rolling in. What do you prefer? Midwife or OB? What are the big differences?

Midwives are typically extremely supportive of natural births and having your birth go your way. They encourage birthing plans etc. Many OB's aren't as in to that sort of thing and are quick to push interventions like pitocin, epederals, pain meds, csections etc. I suggest choosing who best fits the kind of birth you see for yourself... I loved my midwives, I could call them anytime, they spent lots of time with me and really talked out everything before the birth. They were very supportive of my birth preferences and worked hard to make sure I had a safe birth first and an empowering birth second. It was also awesome to go home the same day and the midwife came to our home day 2,4,6 and week 2 and 4 when we were having problems with our little one. Then we saw them up until 6 weeks. Plus if something does go wrong you'd just be transferred to the care of an ob but your midwife would still stay with you.

OB is my preference. I'm a "hippy" RN and still my preference. They're a doctor. A midwife is an advanced trained nurse (at least where I am those are the qualifications). A midwife can't perform surgery if needed in an emergency situation. If just rather not chance anything.

I chose an ob and glad I did. I had an easy breezy pregnancy and at the end of the pregnancy I developed severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome the night after my 40 week check, my kidneys and liver were failing and baby was in distress, I needed a very unexpected c section and I'm glad my own Dr performed the surgery. It is important to find a dr with good bedside manner, though. My office has 4 Dr's and I like all of them,  I never feel rushed.

I recently read a study that showed that US has a huge stillbirth rate . higher than a lot of other countries. And one of the big differences is that those countries use mostly midwives. I think OBs tend to try to speed things up and the c-section rates here are too high also, because of that. 
I want to mention that US doesn't have a procedure for reporting stillbirths, and they have little research on it. Most of them are unknown causes. So they could be doing something wrong and not know it for decades. Something to look into. I will try to use a midwife. I don't like that pregnancy is looked at like a medical condition. Our body's do most of the work. Most of the time, We just need reassurance, guidance, and experience.

I was definitely recommended a midwife they care way more and definitely take there time and make sure you understand instead of giving you the fun around .

I prefer a midwife. I started out with an OB and things felt very clinical, I felt like "just another patient". I switched to a midwife group and absolutely love them. It's different for everyone though, and it's okay to start with one provider and switch if it's. It a good fit. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!
