Bacterial Vaginosis?

Has anyone been diagnosed with BV? My doctor called this morning and said my Pap test showed bacterial Vaginosis. She prescribed me Metronidazole 500mg twice a day. It says not recommend for first trimester. I'm only 12 weeks 3 days. I'm a little worried about taking it but it seems that the benefits of taking the meds out weigh the risk. Any input would be helpful!

First, I will say call your doctor and make sure she prescribed the right one. They make mistakes sometimes and it never hurts to double check.

Second, I had it with my first and was diagnosed at 12+5 and was prescribed the metronidazole gel. I took it that day without side effects, and I called my OB prior to taking the dose to see if she meant to prescribe it and she explained that the gel was safer and she used it on most patients.

Last, call and make sure before deciding to hold out and wait to take any medication. BV along with other common pregnancy vaginal infections can cause problems including contractions and bleeding. That was my first sign I had it, and I assumed I had had it for a week before treatment because it progressed quickly.

It's a class B drug which is the same class as Tylenol but online it does say contraindicated during first trimester because it crosses the placenta. Maybe doc decided you're close enough to your 2nd trimester to take it?

I'm guessing your doctor knows your pregnant- maybe ask if you can wait a few weeks before treatment?
