How to know when baby needs more formula?

My baby was usually waking 1 time every night but last week he started waking up every 4 hours to eat i tried giving him his paci but he cries And cries until i feed him so i'm thinking 6oz aren't enough anymore he is 5 months and 4 days ago started eating solid food

Around that time they go through another growth spurt. You'll know if he wants more formula at the time of feeding if he is upset when the bottle runs dry. If he is content when he finishes his bottle but is waking more for another feeding later on, it is likely a growth spurt where they're just hungrier quicker. 
 
Upping the amount of formula per bottle may just make him throw up if he doesn't want more per feeding, so follow his cues. I always knew to make more when he was still looking for/sucking and wanting his bottle even after it was empty.

Be sure to give milk BEFORE food. If baby is draining the bottle then increase the amount.

Make your normal bottle and if he's still acting hungry make another ounce. Keep feeding by the ounce until he's satisfied. It's a pain but saves wasting formula/milk.

The more you do this you should get an idea of how much he wants at a time. For example, my daughter drinks about 2-4 oz depending on the feed of the day. Most of the time it's 3 oz but sometimes she wants more especially around the fussy time from 6-10pm when she cluster feeds.
