sugar water for a 3 week old? help

My son is 3 weeks old and my mother in law has been giving him sugar water for gas and such but I'm not so sure how I feel about it. Any moms do this?? He will drink 3-4 ounces of formula and then she'll let him drink almost 2 ounces of sugar water. My gut tells me that he shouldn't be drinking that much sugar water if any at all. He's been throwing up more often now that he's been drinking it. Please comment!!!!

Sugar water is not for gas. There is something called gripe water that is sold over the counter for infant gas, but it is not homemade sugar water. Sugar water is given to newborns in the hospital to help subdue them in terms of pain from circumscision etc, but it is literally a small drop on their tongue, not two ounces. Your baby should not be drinking ANYTHING other than breast milk or formula. Please stop immediately

I used some sugar water to help my son latch in the hospital but it was only like a couple drops at a time! Babies can get water intoxication and it can be fatal

As far as I know, Dr said babies can't drink water like that till a few months I don't remember how many she said, but I'd call yur dr and tell yur mil  to stop doing that

Noooo!! His little belly can't process that and it doesn't actually help. Talk to his pediatrician about ways to help with gas

Newborns don't need water. They get enough to drink from milk. He's throwing up because he's being over stuffed with the extra sugar water. My baby (3wks today)gets the hiccups a lot and my mom kept telling me to give him water when she came to visit.. I declined. I googled if babies should get water & questioned his doc. They don't need it. It's your baby so ask her to please stop.

I wouldn't allow that. Sugar water is rarely given in very small amounts for constipation in babies. But that young should not be getting it often nor that much. Look into getting some gripe water, works wonders

What the heck?! Please put a stop to this asap tell her firmly not to give your baby anything other than formula!! Giving extra water to such a young baby especially can be very damaging!!
