Beauty and the Gay Character
Beauty & the Gay Character
My thoughts on beauty and the beast:
Let me preface this by saying that I have a gay brother. And while he may be "gay", his identity is not gay. To me his identity is kind, thoughtful, loving, doting, eccentric, and stubborn- he just happens to also like boys. My daughters will be going to see Beauty and the Beast and I have no qualms about that because, well, they've been around gay people their whole lives and guess what? They don't care. They both are aware their uncle likes boys, and it's only come up in a conversation once with my eldest daughter and this is how it went- "Do you like boys" "yeah actually I do" "cool, I like boys too". The end. Instead of keeping your child away from a Disney classic that is bound to be amazing (I mean Emma Watson is in it *inner Harry Potter nerd squeals*) it's also a great learning and accepting experience for them. If they even notice there is a gay character (which they may or may not), and they ask you about it you can say something along the lines of "Yes, sometimes boys like boys and girls like girls, and that's okay" Wow, that wasn't so hard. And it will teach them to be more accepting of differences in people later on in life. Their gayness isn't going to rub off on you or your kids so chill. Also, Christian's who are losing their shit over the gay character in this movie- seriously? It is not your job to judge people on what you view as a "sin", no matter what you believe, so let's just be loving and accepting and let people be who they are. I find it incredibly ridiculous that a movie theater would choose not to play such a classic story, and they are going to lose out on a ton of dough and probably customers. Sucks for them, but stop giving them so much publicity for their business. And also, please stop making Alabama look like a bunch of homophobic rednecks.
Also, I find it a little odd that people are okay with their children seeing a movie about a woman falling in love with a beast/kidnapper but yet are concerned about a gay character, who isn't even a main character and is only seen in a minimal amount of scenes, but aren't concerned with the fact that Disney is practically romanticizing abuse (just saying- it's just a movie, let your kids be kids and witness great filmography and a classic story). I promise you care way more that there is a gay character than they do (although I really don't understand why).
Oh and by the way, I hate to break it to you but the guy was gay in the original movie- you were just a kid and didn't notice ;)
Sincerely,
The mom with the two rambunctious daughters in the movie theater annoying everyone (sorry in advance)
