Castor oil doesn't work.  It causes some pretty nasty side effects,  cramping,  diarrhea,  nausea.

The theory behind it is that the diarrhea stimulates contractions,  because many women have loose stools cleaning them out before labour,  which other theories of induction also can do,  without the side effects.

It's the only at home induction my midwives have straight out banned.

Perhaps something else might be preferable,  it's the same reasoning behind the spicy food theory.  Dates are supposed to be really good as well.

My sister tried this. Her baby pooped in the womb... so dangerous. Wouldnt ever try this and im 40.4 weeks. Thanks but ill wait ♡

Ok assuming it works and it is not dangerous, I don't see how induction with castor oil at home without supervision is somehow preferrable to a medical induction... I don't see how it would be worth the risk.... I would stay away from it.

My midwife recommended it to me as a very last effort to avoid a medical induction because I'm 8 days overdue. She did however give me super specific directions around it.

I had an ultrasound with a biophysical profile first to make sure baby was perfect, she rated 8/8 so I was told to get a good night sleep and try the castor oil smoothie exact recipe in the morning, taking it in two small doses. I was to take it exactly two days before my scheduled induction so my body has time to recover and rehydrate if it didn't work. I was also told to drink tons of liquids to stay hydrated during the process.

As far as meconium risks, there is a higher risk of meconium in your amniotic fluid when your baby is post term, castor oil or not. There hasn't been a study that really has proven any connection.

I don't think it's for everyone but I'm more than a week past my due date and I've taken it under direct instruction and advice from my midwife as an attempt to avoid a harsher medical induction so I feel good about it.

I took the first dose at 10:30am had some loose BM's (to be expected) and some irregular contractions, lost parts of my mucus plug.

Second dose at 4:30pm and it seemed to do nothing, not even another BM. Then around 8 I started having the odd contraction but wasn't timing. Things started picking up and I've been having having regular painful but not too painful contractions consistently for the past hour. Oh and I've had light bloody discharge.

Contractions could fizzle out still potentially because they aren't horribly painful but I'm hopeful this is it! I'd love to have this baby before I'm induced Monday.

I took castor oil at 4:30pm yesterday and started getting contraction around 12am I left to the hospital at 1:30am and I'm still in labor right now . 6cm dilated and my water broke on its own . Baby is perfectly fine

I took castor oil with my first (I was young and dumb and tired) it kick started labor but it was slowwwwww 36 hours. I had diarrhea for hours. No appetite. Couldn't sleep longer than 30mins to a hour because I just felt so gross. By the time I made it to "active labor" I was dehydrated exhausted and had no fuel in the tank. It wasn't worth it 😭😭😭😭😭
