Would anyone like to share stories about Jaundice?

I had my daughter 8:13pm Sunday & by 3am Monday they were taking her to the NICU bc of Jaundice (bc of my antibodies ). I'm scheduled to leave around noon Tuesday & my feelings are hurt that I won't be taking her with me. 😥😔 To the ones who's children had it, about how long have yours had it? Did it go away with only the light therapy? Did they have to give your baby new blood? Once it goes away does it stay away?

My baby girl had jaundice. We had to go back to the hospital 3 days after being discharged. When we got there, they immediately put her under the lights and she was there for 2 days. She had to poop all the jaundice out and it worked, because oh boy did she poop! Lol. She got better and now she's 6 weeks old and it hasn't come back.

My son was born December 21st of last year(we were discharged the 23rd). I chose to breastfeed so we took him to the lactation department the day after Christmas to make sure my milk was coming in and he was gaining weight. The nurse thought he looked jaundice so she ordered a bili test. We left. Got a call to take him to the ER immediately. His bilirubin number was 28.5. (They say brain damage can happen around 23.) he spent 2 days under the bili light and he was discharged with a bili number of 10.5. We were told by 3 doctors that it was impossible for the bili number to go back up, and he would be fine. They were wrong. He number went back up to 17, and they found out it was because of my breastmilk. Apparently it's rare but it does happen. Jaundice now scares the absolute crap out of me. I'm hoping that he doesn't end up with developmental delays and he brain is okay.

My son was only faintly jaundice when we left the hospital monday. By wednesday he was so yellow levels were 20.5, i believe because my milk had just come in that day he wasn't taking in enough to expel the bilirubin. We were admitted Wednesday and left late thursday evening with levels at 13.5. Tested again friday morning and levels jumped to 17. So we rented a bili blanket and I was able to take him off of it sunday with levels at 12. He's now a beautiful and healthy 3 month old. It happens and most of the time mild cases can be cured with some baby sunbathing. There was no sun during the days we were home, so there wasn't much I could do. It's okay momma, with the light treatment your little one should be right as rain soon.

My son was born 13 days "late" and came out with a little jaundice. Like so much, I had done my research and felt I knew what to expect. But I didn't know everything, such as it can take three days after birth for the bilirubin levels to show truthfully. This is why you're baby will probably be kept a couple days more than you'd expect, so they can be sure it's a true positive decrease in levels. In our case we went home and we're told to follow up asap with the family doctor. She then said that she'd send a referral for an LC as we were having trouble with breastfeeding and he seemed a little dehydrated. I waited for the referral call as well as the follow up nurse. When she called she was shocked the referral hadn't yet come through. The fault was on the LC'S office. They said they often misplace referrals 😠 
Long story short, his levels were through the roof and we were rushed to the NICU for treatment. I was so angry with the incompetence of the doctors and LC and that hospitals rush mothers out too soon, so angry this happened. As a new mom I was a zombie at the mercy of their professional responsibility to identify and treat these issues. I was also dissapointed in myself, feeling I should have known or done more. I blamed myself for my milk not coming in sooner to help flush out the bilirubin from his system. But that was ridiculous, I had no control of these things. 
Anyway. He spent three and a half days in treatment under lights and at first fed by tube. I diligently pumped my milk for him round the clock and tried to let myself rest between visits. We were given a guest room in the hospital so I could nurse him. He was down to normal levels within the next day, but those levels can jump back so was kept for observation. As long as levels don't spike there is little concern and I've never heard of jaundice coming back. The hardest part is not being able to bond at home. But just take advantage of the time you can cuddle and nurse. Soon you'll be home 😊
