selfish or no?

So I was just thinking about this. I've known people who have committed suicide and I don't really know how I feel about it but- is suicide considered selfish? 
Whether you're running away from a problem or a mental/physical illness? 
What do you think?

I'm definitely not considering it for myself and don't know of anyone at the moment who is suicidal, thankfully.

Of course not. If you dub someone selfish for being in a state that death felt like their best option then you we're probably either part of their problem or failed to help them. In other words, you're the one who was selfish.

I hate when people label it as "selfish", because it's dismissive and oversimplifying the issue. People kill themselves for various reasons, but many times it is the result of mental illness. In this case, saying it's "selfish" is the most insensitive thing a person can say, because it's dismissing the pain that person was in. We have a long way to go when it comes to destigmatizing mental illness.

I find it to be more selfish for others to expect them to continue living in that pain just so that they don't have to feel the loss. When someone is sick with cancer, but they refuse chemotherapy because they don't want to put their body through all of that, knowing that the outcome cannot be certain, do you consider that selfish as well? Do you think they should put themselves through something they are afraid of because it will be too hard for everyone else if they don't? Some people are less afraid of death than they are of living in pain and agony. It's just their choice. I don't believe anyone should go through more pain and suffering that they are particularly afraid of going through, to spare anyone else's feelings. Their life, their choice!

It's selfish to think a person's world should revolve around you or others in that person's life. It's not "running away". It's called "mental illness" for a reason. Sometimes people get tired of being dealt shitty cards. If you think it's selfish or "running" away, you clearly don't understand mental illness and have never had that voice in the back your head telling you to kill yourself and that everyone will be so much better when your gone. You've clearly never had it tell you that your loved ones will throw a party and dance on your grave. I've had that voice and it sucks. It's so hard to fight what your brain is telling you to do. It was so hard because on top of the auditory hallucinations, I was visually hallucinating my head getting blown off, me hanging myself, me taking a bunch of pills, and me bleeding out numerous times a day. I couldn't sleep and it would happen when I was alone in the middle of the night. When no one was awake and I was too scared to tell anyone. That is what that's like. It is more terrible than any damn grief that anyone has to go through. No one can imagine what that voice is like. No one can imagine what seeing yourself die multiple times is like. And it's different for everyone. Someone could have it better and someone could have it worse than that. It's a damn joke that people call it selfish and running away...

I personally think it's selfish to consider someone committing suicide selfish. I can only imagine the hell the person was going through to even consider taking their own life. I've been severely depressed to the point where I wanted to die, but never got to the point where I wanted to actually kill my self. I'm sure for someone to get to that point they believe there's no way out. I feel like if you're a family member/ friend of someone who took their own life and you're just thinking about how selfish they are for not being there, you're only thinking about your own feelings and not the person who felt like there way no other resort.

It's selfish because your feelings are hurt? Please. 🙄

I'm so glad there's so many people who agree with me on this. I don't see it as selfish. Thinking that someone should continue to live their life when they'd rather be dead, just to make you or others happy, is selfish.

My grandfather committed suicide and for a long time I felt it was selfish cuz "he left us behind". My dad and grandmother still haven't gotten over it and it's been about 8 years. But I finally forgave him and I feel a lot better!! He suffered from mental illness. We now believe he suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia(he used to say crazy shit from time to time). I miss him every single day and we still talk about him and laugh at all the silly things he did.

People who label suicide as selfish only perpetuates the stigma against depression, and will only keep people from seeking help.

It is not selfish, that person is in so much pain that death only seems like the best option. There should be nothing but support, and not shame. Saying suicide is selfish makes you a horrible person.

No I don't think it's selfish. Sometimes you just get so low and there's nothing that can convince you that you have any worth. That's a terrible state of mind to be in. How could you think about feelings of other people when you think there's no one who understands you or your situation is so shitty, it's best you don't exist? That's a dark place to be in and I think people should be more supportive than saying that they're selfish.
