low IUD strings

So I got my IUD inserted just over a week ago (the day my period ended) and up until today, the strings were really hard to find. But today, they were super easy to find and they were hanging lower than normal. I didn't feel any hard plastic so I don't think it's being expelled. I've had no spotting or cramps for the past 3 days. Is it possible that it's out of place? I've made a dr appointment but it's not until 2 weeks. Would it be safe to have sex? Would I still need a condom?
