Would you let your step child call you mommy?

My step daughter is 2 and half. I've been around since she was 4 months old. She knows who her mother is and she knows who I am. She nearly always calls me by my name, however recently she's started to call me mama. I started to correct her but then I realised she does it mostly as a comfort thing. (When cuddling me) I've stopped correcting her now. I'm having her little brother in 9 weeks, and I will definitely be called mommy by her father when the baby is born (just as I call him daddy now) is it mean to tell her she can't call me mommy too? I don't want to take away from her mother at all but I don't want her to feel left out either? What would you do?

Discuss it with your partner and maybe with the child's mum if possible. I wouldn't be comfortable with my child calling anyone else mum... that's just me personally.

I've been with my stepdaughter since she was an infant. When she was about 2, she started calling me Mama (her biological mom was Mommy at the time). This actually led to a fight for a while, but then her mother realized that if she wanted her fiance to be a dad, she couldn't be upset with me for being a mom.

My stepdaughter is 5 now and calls both of her moms Mommy/Mama/Mom and both dads Daddy/Dad. She never gets confused, but she sometimes has to explain things to adults when she's talking about one of us.

Talk to your partner and see what he thinks.
I personally would let her call you whatever she wants.  Id give anything for my son to receive the love you are giving her.   My ex's new gf does NOT like my son and has always denied him being around them and his half sibling(her child with his daddy)  Shes called him bastard and denies him and her child to being siblings when they are.  I see the pain my son had then. Its been 6 years and he is now 12.  The more love they receive the better it is. And if calling you mommy makes her happy...why not ?

I would be very upset if my daughter called another woman mommy however it would be very warming that my daughter loved this other woman enough. I would know she's in good hands. But ide still be sad. Have a talk with her mother and see what advice she can give you, let her know how you feel.

I think it's just the child's way of showing she is comfortable with you, I can totally understand the worry of some backlash from bio mommy so discussing that with her doesn't seem like a bad idea.

I work as a private nanny and even the older kids slip up and call me mom/mommy on accident and some on purpose. I never correct them. Most of the time they didn't mean to it's just because I'm doing the same thing they see their mother do all the time and it embarrasses them when I correct them. When they are little, they will most likely grow out of it. She isn't old enough to really understand who mommy is and why she is mommy and your not. However, you are now in a mother role for her. You care for her and take care of her like a mother does. It isn't uncommon for children to call step parents mom or dad and most mothers don't mind. They completely understand. She isn't going to
understand why the new baby gets to call you mommy but she isn't allowed. It could end up making her feel left out and not as loved. I've worked with step kids who weren't allowed to call their step mom by anything other than their name and that really hurt them when a new baby came. It made them feel like they weren't part of the family. I wouldn't want her to feel left out personally.

My step daughters used to call me mom too until their real mom found out and flipped her shit. I tried explaining to her that they can call me whatever they feel comfortable with and I will not force them to call me mom nor tell them they can't. That, in my opinion, was their choice. Well she lost her shit about it (even though she calls her step dad "dad") so now they just call me by my name. Come to find out, she and her new husband FORCE them to call him dad and the girls can't stand the guy. So I simply reminded her of her hissy fit from years ago 😊

My sons birth mother left him at 1. Right after he turned 2 I came around and he always called me by my name. His birth mother came around when he turned 3 and tried to pressure him to call her momma but he didn't know who she was. So in turn instead of calling her momma he came home and started calling me mommy. He's 5 now and I'm mommy and always will be and he calls her by her name. He sees her 1-2 hours every other weekend. It depends on yalls situation.
