Emotional abuse?

Please describe what emotional abuse is to you, I'm in a situation where I feel manipulated and mistreated but I'm not sure if it's emotional abuse or not...

Answer

Emotional abuse comes in a lot of different forms and is different for everyone who experiences it. It's more extreme in some situations or it's just little things that you don't really notice.

For me it was always having my needs, concerns, etc brushed under the rug. If we disagreed then I was being silly, if I wanted something (like to go out with friends or for him to not come over that night) then my wants didn't matter. Any issue we had in our relationship wasn't an issue unless it was his. I didn't even notice it at first at all. I didn't even realize that I was talking less or that I was just doing everything to keep him happy. It didn't occur to me that I was losing more and more of myself every time I said yes to him. Eventually the abuse became more sexual as well and by that point I knew there was a problem but I was scared and so damaged I just suppressed things and pretended it was ok.

I left for a month to see my dying grandfather and he said some rude things about how I wasn't taking care of him (he'd torn his ACL in his knee and did need help but I was 18 and able to use my parents as an excuse thank God). I broke up with him over skype for his words about my family.

It's been 2 years since my ex. I now have an amazing boyfriend. But I didn't really see the emotional or actually accept the physical abuse till him. I really only realized the emotional side when I noticed that I was afraid to bring up a concern to my boyfriend. I had such a hard time talking to him. He's spent a lot of time working on that with me. I'm a lot better now. It's different for everyone. But if you feel manipulated then it's probably some form of abuse.
