Antibiotics & Hearing
Hey ladies. My twins were born at 36 weeks. One went into the NICU for transitioning lung problems and the other was perfectly fine and stayed with me. The one who went to the NICU was only there for 2 weeks which was obviously a huge blur and I honestly don't remember much. Today he had an additional hearing test (at 3 months) which I assumed was just an extra precaution because of his time in the NICU. When I got there I asked the doctor and she said it was for two reasons 1. Being in the NICU longer than 5 days and 2. Because he was on antibiotics while in the NICU. Apparently (although small) there is a risk that these antibiotics can cause hearing loss. Now I feel terrible but I don't even remember him being on antibiotics. I think my husband and I were really out of the loop the first couple days because we couldn't go down there at first. We both were getting over colds and they wouldn't let us into the NICU until we both got tested for the flu. It took about 48 hours until I was allowed down there. Anyways my question is has anyone else dealt with antibiotics and possible hearing loss. So far my LO is fine and passed today but he has to repeat it again at a year, 2 years, and 3 years.
