"Why should my taxes go towards __________?"

🌹

I see this everywhere and while I understand it, I can't see why this mentality is so acceptable: The "Why should my taxes go towards __________ when I don't need it?"

Food stamps? Hard working people who live in poverty still need to eat. Unemployed people looking for jobs need to eat.

Handicap facilities? Handicapped people need to get around, too.

Health care? Sick people need care, too.

Free school lunch? Children who live in poverty need to eat, too.

As far as why YOUR taxes should go towards helping them, why shouldn't they? These are your people and neighbors. Shouldn't you WANT them to thrive? Isn't being vehemently against caring for them just because you don't need help selfish?

And of course there's the concern that the system is abused and lazy people just want handouts, but this is VERY RARELY the case. And, even when it is, I'd personally rather make sure the occasional lazy a-hole doesn't die of starvation.
