LBGT 101: What does "transgender" mean?
Transgender is an umbrella term referring to people whose gender identity doesn't match with the sex that they were assigned as birth. Some trans folks choose to have top or bottom surgery or take hormones so that their gender expression matches their gender identity, but it's not necessary that a trans person do this.
A trans man is someone who identifies as male, and a trans woman is someone who identifies as female.
