LBGT 101: Stonewall: what you have to know
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, NYC. LGBTQ discrimination was normal and expected; it wasn't until 1973 that the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental illness.
When the police broke down the doors to arrest people at the night club, though, the LGBTQ community inside fought back. This sparked a six day conflict between the police and the community members, and the foundation of the modern day pride movement. Here's to protest!
