Who pays the wedding?

The other day my friend's mom saw me looking at a wedding planning magazine and after I told her what I wanted if I ever get married she said: "That's fine, but just save some money because the girl and her family pays th wedding" I said: "WHAAAAT?!" 
Is this true? Who paid yours? As I knew before, both and their families paid for it.
