Used baby clothes?

Is it bad that I'm getting hand me downs from friends and family?  I am a FTM and everybody I know it's giving me crap because of it.  I got car seats, a beautiful swing, clothes and other things.  They also say "it's your first baby, you should get everything new!"  I think it's alright because then I'm not spending so much money on clothes that my baby won't even get to wear.  Man people make me mad
