labia tear ?

Has anyone had one of their labia tear vertically during birth? I did close by the clit and no one noticed in birth and by the 4th day at home i did and it had already started to heal as two separate pieces. They never gave me stitches and when I went back they said I'd have to have reconstructive surgery to fix it  or I could just leave it alone. I'm very depressed and self conscious about it. I've never even heard of this happening. Am I alone?
