Doctor or Midwife?

Question

This is my first pregnancy and I was given the choice to have a doctor or a midwife, does anyone have a preference? And why? I'm curious to see what everyone's thoughts are! 😊

Midwife.

The care is much more superior in my opinion and experience. I started out with a doctor for my first, and I literally saw him checking his watch while we were in the appointment, I never felt as if I could ask questions because we were on a time restraint...after all, doctors want you in and out, prescribe and move on...always have been like that in my opinion.

Midwives are trained for babies, pregnancy, labour and delivery, they make things very calm, allow you to get what's off your chest, and ask all the questions you need. They are tentative when labour happens, and comforting. I had both of my children at home with my midwife and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I went with doctor. I personally feel safer with a doctor but that's just me lol but if you weren't planning to give birth in a hospital setting you should have a midwife

I think it depends on your parenting views, I prefer a more natural approach so I would want a midwife.

Midwife, midwife, midwife!

They are absolutely well trained in both normal pregnancies and in when to refer you to an OB.

Of course, you need to do your research because not all midwives or OBs are created equal.

Midwifery care tends to provide you with a much more personal model of care, more time in appointments for questions and reassurance, and a view that pregnancy and birth are normal biological functions, not pathologies.

There are also midwives with birth attendance rights at hospitals and hospitals with midwives on staff, so it doesn't have to be a choice of hospital or midwives. Many midwives now also have freestanding birthing centers, or you could opt for a home birth with some midwives.

I had a birth center baby with midwives, that ended up at the birth center's back up hospital. I was past 42 weeks. I had a natural delivery after a cervix softening pessary was used.

My next two births were at home in a rented birthing tub with midwives.

My upcoming birth is in a hospital and attended by midwives on staff.

I adore my obgyn. He is so nice and really caring. He takes the time to answer any and all questions me and my husband have. He delivered our first child as well and was just as amazing then.

Unless you're high risk, use a midwife! I had a doctor until 27 weeks and they checked heart beat, blood pressure, weight, etc. but then they'd just ask if I had any questions, and then leave. I loved them but I really had no idea what was going on or what I was in for.

I switched to a midwife and they gave me OPTIONS for the glucose test (welcomes grape juice? 😋) they also felt baby and my pelvis at every visit and they explained to me how birth would go, what signs to look for, what I could do and when to help get baby out, what would happen if I went over, etc. They basically answered all the questions that I didn't know I had but it put my mind so at ease I wasn't even scared when my water broke. If I had continued with my doctor I think I would have ended up being induced or having a c section, not that those are bad options but if you're low risk and not interested in those, I think midwives are much better at putting your mind at ease!

I had an OB, and while he was super awesome I'm going to have a midwife for my next pregnancy. Mostly because I want a water birth (and would prefer to do it at home if I can), but also because I've done lots of research and decided this would be the best route, and that I should have done it with my first pregnancy.

Where are you giving birth? I'm using a midwife but it's through a hospital setting. That way the midwives will always check with the doctor if anything serious happens during pregnancy or labor. If everything goes smoothly it's just me and the midwives and I get a calmer, more natural birth like I want. It's pretty great. Just depends on what you want because they both offer good things.
