Do you think it's ethical to allow women in prison to keep their babies?

Question

They have programs for pregnant women in prison. They get seperated from the general population after they give birth and they get to keep their babies in prison with them. 
The idea is that this helps the women stay out of prison when they get out, it gives them ambition. Also that it's beneficial for the child if they can have that bond with their mother. 
Only non violent offenders get to do this.  What do you think?

I'm for it depending on the jail time and the offense. Babies are better with their mothers. End of story.

If it helps the mother stay out of the system in future and she stops perpetuating the same cycle of crime, then I'm for it. It also allows for the mother and child to bond and that is very important for both, and it provides for a healthy relationship because she now knows that she needs to get her act together for the child and her future.

I'm for it. If it is the same jail that I seen the documentary on then the way the women get chosen have a criteria to meet. They can't have any history of violence, no rule violations in prison, is usually for women with newborns or became incarcerated while pregnant and must have less than 2 years left of incarceration. They are located in a different part of the prison which is more child friendly away from the other inmates. They are expected to take care of the child, they don't get left in a nursery of prison workers to care for. They promote bonding and maternal bonds to help prevent committing another crime and itsmsjown a very positive response amoung those who have went through the program. It's a good thing for these women and I think it should be a more common thing.

I feel torn on this topic, while I think every mother should be able to raise their child, has there been any research or studies on how growing up in a prison affects the child? I honestly don't know, just curious if anyone else does. Assuming they have found there are not negative impacts to the child I would be for it.

I have seen documentaries on this and it breaks my heart when they separated the babies from their moms.

100% for it. Nobody is better for a child than a loving mother. It doesn't matter what setting. It doesn't matter how much money you have or don't have. Babies are better with their moms and don't even remember their first 3 years which is the maximum amount of time you can have in your sentence for the baby program. The women aren't in cells, they're not in shackles. It's like a normal community living environment. The babies have bathtubs and toys and clothes and bouncers. They get to go outside . There's no issue with the baby feeling "locked up". If you're fine with a baby living with their mom in a battered women's shelter or homeless shelter you should have no issue with them living with their mom while she serves her light sentence.
