speech therapy?

Just had my daughters 18 month appointment yesterday and our pediatrician recommended speech therapy because she has not said 15 words yet, only 5-10 and she doesn't use them consistently. she lets us know everything she wants with her hands & sounds, but she understands everything we say, understands commands, knows what things are called, etc etc. I know this isn't a big deal just wondering if anyone has any similar experiences or has looked into speech therapy around this age?

We are starting speech therapy as well. My son is great at communicating by pointing and making sounds. He'll grab my hand and take me to show me what he wants. It's just the speech that's not there. No words at all though he babbles a ton. We will be starting soon and I am very much looking forward to it. Nothing to lose :)

We started my daughter in speech therapy because she had no true words at 15 months. She's on her third week and we can get her to say "ta da" if we ask her to, and she'll say "da da" when her daddy gets home but that's about it. We had a terrible experience with her first evaluation- I'll spare the details because it was horrifying. BUT we got a second opinion and decided to get her started in speech therapy, my husband and I figured it can't hurt her and will only help her so why not? 3 weeks and we love both of her therapists and we both feel like we've gotten a lot of guidance and resources to use at home. My daughter has always been extremely independent and we never asked much of her. She couldn't follow commands because we never asked her to. Now she can follow quite a few and it's such a joy to see her doing new things! Some doctors are asking a lot but with speech we figured it could only help. Follow your gut.

My best friend and I both have 19 month olds and her son doesn't say many words at all while my son can say almost anything I say. She's taken him to speech therapy and told her everything was fine just to do a few exercises with him give him choice to choose from so he has to say something other than yes or no. I honestly so see much of a learning difference in our boys I think they're just different people and so young they can't possible be expected to learn things at exactly the same time. They started crawling standing and walking months apart as well! Before we know it they will be doing all the same things and we'll look back and remember how silly it was to compare. On the other side I have a friend whose 20 month old is not speaking and needs tubes in his ears but they've known about his problems for a while not and he is having surgery soon. So again not a learning disability.

I find this so strange. My 4 year old attends speech and language. We are in the UK and they weren't concerned until he hit 2.5/3 years old. Even still I had to get his hearing checked before they'd refer.

Mine knows how to count to ten, part of her ABCs, can say about 15 words, and even signs. BUT she hardly ever uses her words, she either points, brings it to you, or drags you to whatever. She may say about 3 words consistently, she just doesn't like to talk. She has reverted back to baby talk also, walks around saying goo goo ga ga all day.

Just had our 18 mo checkup yesterday and they asked if he knew/says up to 7 words. I wouldn't worry about it 15 words is crazy! My son can understand everything and do everything we ask him to do but still doesn't talk real words much. He can say mom dad car that juice bye mine,yea and blue.  And lots of baby language. He also knows all the animal sounds if you ask what they say he will make the sound and knows the color blue.

Wow that's crazy! I had my 18 month appt and she was ok w him saying only 3 words. I guess every peditrician is different. Like u said my baby understands commands and will try to communicate by pointing or grunting but doesn't say much words like literally says dads, no and mama. Lol
