Do you think a sensory room in schools is a useful idea?

The Hanover elementary school in Connecticut has recently made a room called the sensory room for students with autism. It offers a punching bag, dulled colored lighting, carpeted floors, and different activities for the kids to help with focusing and learning. ( Edutopia on Facebook has a video. I highly suggest watching it ☺)

I love the idea. But I think other kids should have access too, like if they're frustrated and just want to hit something. I was that way as a kid and that would have helped a lot.

My cousin has asbergers which is a form of autism. He had a room like that when he was in elementary school and it really helped him through his struggles during the time he was with the class. It was very great for him. He was able to tell the teacher if he felt he needed to go in there and relax if he was becoming overwhelmed. 💜☺

My son has adhd and spd he very overwhelmed sometimes and the sensory room helps him out so much

Yessss!!! It helps SO much. I used to volunteer in a pre-k autistic classroom and they had a sensory room and I can't even explain the behaviors difference between the classroom I volunteered in and the classroom who didn't utilize the sensory room.

I'm kinda torn because when my son had to have speech, they used different sensory play activities such as rice and beans, beads and putty, painting, and other stuff like that while he was taking his speech lessons because it helped him focus more on his speech while having fun so his speech wouldn't just be about speech which can be boring. But, my concern was always having him get too hyper focused on that and having him always associate sensory play with his speech, so that way he'd have a harder time learning, without that extra stimulation like he normally would if he was just sitting at a desk, listening to his teacher give a lesson. I mean, I wouldn't want my kids ability to learn to become dependent upon sensory play. It's good in small doses, and it does help, but there is such thing as too much.

Yes and I think neurotypical students should be able to use it as needed, too. Sensory blankets have been proven to help with anxiety, for example.
