when would you take the diabetes test?

My OB gave me the lab orders and drink for the gestational diabetes test. She said I can take it any time between 26-28 weeks. She also said not to diet and try to eat as normal as possible, so they have the most accurate reading. We are going on vacation during week 27. So should I test in week 26, when I will be eating as I normally do? Or should I test in week 28 after vacation eating? My husband said to do it after, so I can enjoy our vacation. Our baby is being monitored for growth restrictions.  I feel like if I have it, I would like to know as soon as possible so that I can adjust accordingly and do what's best for the baby. What do you think?

I would take it before for the most accurate reading. And you should have results within a couple of days. If for some reason you "fail", you'd want to know asap so you can adjust your habits, I assume. And if you pass, you are free to enjoy your vacation without worrying about how you vacation eating will effect the results when you get back.

My sister took it at 26 and passed. At 29 weeks they had reason to believe she had GD and infact did get it later at 29. So I don't think testing as early as possible is a great idea.

I'd do 26w for both reasons (you'll be eating normally + can adjust for baby's health if you have it)

Thanks for all of your thoughts ladies! I just remembered that I failed the first one with my son. They had me return a month later for the 3hr test and I didn't have to modify my diet in the interim. I think if I fail the first one this time, I'll try to reign in my diet even while on vacation. I'm going to go right before we leave for vacation🤞
