Breastfeeding on demand or schedule?

When you first brought home baby, did you feed on demand based on baby's behavior? Or, did you just have a regular feeding schedule even if baby was sleeping/not crying?

Fed every 3 hours until she was back to her birth weight then I fed on demand unless she went too long then I would make sure to get her to eat. It worked great for us and she had slept 12+ hrs a night since she was 3 months old and she's 1 now.

I have always fed my babies when they were hungry not on a schedule. The schedule didn't come until about 1 1/2 years old and even then they got a few more snacks than the older children. All my children have been a healthy weight.

They will likely tell you to follow a schedule until they return to birth weight, then on demand. 
By the time my daughter was a week she had returned to birth weight so I switched to on demand. Before that I fed every 3 hours regardless of her being awake/asleep.

In the beginning when baby was born i would feed every 2 hours or when i felt full.. Then i trusted my instincts and let baby "tell" me when it was time to eat.

I always feed my baby girl on demand. When she would sleep longer than expected I didn't wake her. We were at a fair yesterday and she was thirsty so I had to nurse her. I was a little nervous but I covered up and fed my baby 🤗

I fed on demand but never let them go over 2-3 hours until they were able to wake themselves to feed. That can take up to 3 months for the baby to figure out. Breastmilk is very well and quickly digested which is why they feed more often than formula fed babies.

I had a friend who had a newborn who was a lazy eater, so I think to get him eating what he should be they had to space out feedings in intervals so he was hungrier when he was fed and consumed more. Otherwise he would just graze and never be hungry, not eating enough. I think it depends on your baby and how good of an eater you have. If they eat well, I will let them demand but also have a time limit on how long you won't go beyond between feedings.

On Demond with my son.  I think that's usually the recommendation with the guideline that newborns need to feed about every 2 hrs. If they go longer than 3 hours you should probably offer to feed.  That was never an issue with mine, felt like he was latched constantly, but I guess some newborns are more sleepy and you might have to wake them to feed.  I think it also depends on if they are returning to birthweight and gaining on the right track.  As they get older they will feed less often.
