Boyfriend: In person versus texting???

My boyfriend and I are great together in person. We make each other laugh and we get along amazingly! We're physically affectionate and it's great... but when we're apart we don't communicate well. We'll send "whatcha doing" every other text because we don't really have anything to say through text. He's not great at texting to begin with and sometimes I worry I'm boring over text also? But sometimes I would just rather not talk at all and just wait to see him in person instead of dealing with the back and forth boring text messages so I don't reply. But then he sends me texts like ":( why'd you stop replying?" Which confuses me because I figured he got bored since I would receive an "lol" or a "yeah" or something.  I honestly don't know how to address this problem? And I honestly am unsure if this is even a big deal at all since we do well in person. Any other girls experience this? This is my first very serious relationship so I'm unaware if we're suppose to be just as good communicating through text as in person.
