Is the bride supposed to pick out the bridesmaid dresses?

My maid of honor is sending me pictures of dress ideas. They're all cute and exactly like the ones I've looked at, if not they're not far from being the same. She keeps telling me "you should have your maid of honor have a different dress than the rest" 
I am having a maid and a matron because I couldn't pick between the two. She picked a prettier dress for herself as the maid and a different one for the matron. I feel like she's going to try and call the shots.. we haven't even gone in person to go look at dresses yet..
I was going to pick some things, see what they like and what looks best on everybody.
