I'm wondering if my SO is special

I'm wondering if my significant other is special. Now, it would never change anything if he is. Let me explain, he does have some learning disabilities. He can't write at all. I've completely over looked that, because he is amazing, kind, has an amazing worth ethic, creative, and all around normal to me. His mother recently told me he's never been diagnosed with being dyslexic or ADHD, the doctors just assumed and began treating it. His family told me I would have to take care of him. He gets himself In trouble because he speaks in run on sentences. He'll jump topics while speaking. They told me to really take care of him. He's extremely forgetful and creates a huge mess in everything he does. My father sat me down today and told me if he is ever going to get anywhere convince him to learn to read and write. I've tried on numerous occasions over the years. My father said I will literally be taking care of this guy. I have been with him for 8 years. I love him dearly. I'm wondering if I'm with a mentally challenged man. I've dated an autistic guy in high school without even realizing, and my snobby popular friends pointed out "something is off about him." He was a sweetheart also. I'm not one to judge, but I'm curious if this is the case again. Any thoughts or advice?
