Condo or House?

Question

Me and my husband have been thinking about buying a condo... I'm looking for some feedback as to if we should, or just wait to buy a house instead. Please share your thoughts/ experiences! We live upstate New York.

We don't live in a big area like NY but we had the opportunity to buy a condo/townhouse or a house and we went with the house. We're a little outside town and have a quarter acre and a large garage/shop and it cost the same as buying a condo with the association frees added. We have room for kids to play in the yard (one day) and don't have to hear our neighbors have sex anymore 🤣🤣 But you also have to consider Lifestye, if you or your partner don't want to maintain a yard or pay someone to landscape or need to be closer to the city for public transport, work or nightlife then you probably want a condo.

I don't know about buying but have lived in a condo and currently living in a house (renting though)... I didn't enjoy living in a condo compared to a house. I would never buy a condo. I would wait if I was you and save up for a house.

Benefits to a condo include: an association that takes care of many maintenance and landscaping issues, and the ability to have a good-sized personal space in a populous area/somewhere "in town." If you are in the middle of nowhere, or even not right in the middle of a city or town, and condos aren't any cheaper than houses, I would say the main difference would be in how much work and $ you want to be on the hook for re: maintenance.  Not owning your own roof, for example (which you wouldn't with a condo), could end up saving you a lot of money. On the other hand, if your association is poorly funded, you could have a leaky roof that it is not within your power to fix.

I would never buy a condo because of all of the rules you have to abide by - such as getting permission when you want to paint or remodel, and having to buy a specific mailbox, screen door, doorknob, etc.  My best friend owns a condo and needed a new doorknob and the only doorknob the association permitted was no longer being produced and cost $500!  For a freaking doorknob!

Houses have more potential and larger yards if you have or want kids.
