How do you feel about programs where women inmates who go to prison pregnant can keep their baby in prison with them for the first few years?

A baby is best with its mom. Idc what anyone says. Nobody can care for that baby better than their mom can. That being said, yes it's beneficial for the baby and mom. Baby gets to be with the person they've already spent 9 months with and mom has something to keep her occupied and out of trouble. The babies aren't aware of their surroundings so the "it's wrong to keep a baby in jail" argument is played. They have regular clothes, toys , bouncers, they sleep in cribs or with their moms. They have baby tubs and get to go outside. The moms are separated from Gen Seg so there's no risk of the baby falling in the wrong hands. And most Jails have the requirement that mom not have any violent incidents on her record and only have one year or less to serve at the time of her baby's birth. When they get out, the only one who will ever know they were in there is the mom. The baby won't even remember. I don't believe there are any harmful effects.

It's great for the baby and the privilege is granted to non-violent offenders. The babies are also kept separate from regular inmates, so I agree with the program.

It also motivates women not to become repeat offenders.

Honestly, it wasn't something I've though of until that one early episode of OITNB where Maria gave birth and her little girl was immediately taken from her. It was heartbreaking.

As long as the mother and her surroundings don't put the child in danger, I'm all for it. It can see it being beneficial to both mother and baby.

A newborn baby needs to be with it's mother. Most people in prison are just like people in the free world.

Factoring for obvious things like what their offense was, I think it can be really great. It is beneficial to both mom and baby to have that bonding time.

I think it can also be a really great rehabilitative tool that can help reduce the rate of recidivism for these moms.

Not only are these programs beneficial to the baby, but they are incredibley successful for the mother as well. Mothers who have full access to their newborn in prison have a much lower reincarnation rate. 100% support it for nonviolent crimes
