Are car seat inserts/body cuddlers safe?

Are car seat inserts/body cuddlers like this one safe to use in a car seat with a newborn? I'm due in a couple weeks and my mom got me one and insists I'll need it when my baby is just born to hold him and his head in place, but I've heard and read that they are not safe in an accident. I've heard that a better recommendation is to use rolled up swaddle blankets on each side of his head. What do you all think?

Anything that does not come with the seat, and or that interferes with the straps and fastens is unsafe. They also aren't crash tested it fire resistant in most cases.
  Two rolled up swaddle blankets are ideal; they're also flame retardant.

You are correct about the blanket. Although I never used anything with my baby. If will often void the warranty of the car seat if they're used as well. If the baby is buckled in properly they should be pretty supported and not need a ton of stuff to support their head.

Yes use rolled up receiving blankets.
Anything else will void the car seat warranty if in an accident unless approved in your car seat manual (which is normally one made by the same company specifically for that brand of car seat)

Not safe to use in a car seat. Beyond voiding the warranty, it can cause airway obstruction in a newborn. The car seat and any insert it comes with is sufficient. If you have concerns about head control, two tightly rolled recieving blankets can be placed along the body for support.

Agree with all above saying it's not safe and voids warranty, however majority car seats I have seen come with a new born insert and that really is more than enough. Plus they literally last in the insert for like a month so I wouldn't waste your money.

We ended up putting blankets around the head to hold it in place when we left the hospital bc i forgot to put ours in.

I think u shouldn't because if u have too hold the baby's head then what's the point of it u should just get a regular one

If you decide to use one you have to go with your car seat manufacturers brand for safety reasons, but in my opinion they're a waste of money. I bought one for my daughter and never used it. The infant car seats already come with sufficient padding to support the babies head.

I used a head support in my stroller for a month or so when we first started placing my daughter in it instead of popping the car seat into the stroller frame. I would not use that in a car seat though.
