how do you count the days of your period?

I usually spot a day before so I know it's coming and sometimes a few days after. Also sometimes my period stops or spots for a day and then starts back up with bleeding the next day. How should I count the days? How do you?

I kinda have the same problem.... mine starts as spotting but gradually progresses into full blown crime scene throughout the day... (or the next day)... if I need a cup (instead of a liner) I count that as my period.... but, if I'm only using a liner than I don't mark that day as the start. 
As for the mid cycle stoppage I just count that day as a period day until I have a full 24 hours of no bleeding.

I count the day of full flow. I usually spot a day before also. If my period stops and starts again, I'd count the day unless it's spotting, I would just put down "spotting" instead of a period day. My period doesn't stop and continue anymore though 😅
