dissolving stitches?

Hi ladies, I'm 17 days postpartum and my doctor after my vaginal delivery said the stitches I had for my second degree tear and two grazes would dissolve within 10 days. Well, when I look down there with a mirror I can't see any of the white stitches anymore, but I can definitely feel them under the skin of my second degree tear. Any idea how much longer I should wait for them to dissolve? And also, I swear the doctor stitched my tear up too far, I can't see the opening of my vagina anymore! What the heck!! Is that normal for them to stitch up a bit too far?

I would avoid messing around with the sewn together area too much. Just let it heal. If the stitches are completely covered by skin they will dissolve, it just takes longer for some. As for being sewn up too far, it's possible but unlikely. You could still be swollen and everything down there has been stretched and is healing. Unless your pain is increasing, you have foul smelling discharge, or you develop a fever I wouldn't worry too much. Be patient with yourself and with your body. It needs some time to recover and heal. Re-evaluate at the 6 week mark and discuss with your doctor any concerns about the sewing job then.

I'm not sure about the stitching too far but I was also told mine would dissolve in 7-10 days and I'm almost 5 weeks pp now and still have at least some of them. Hoping it's normal but I'll find out at my 6 week pp appointment
